Named after the Ouzoud waterfalls in Morocco, this Azilal rug truly tells its own story, both in its design and origins. A handmade piece made of wool, featuring a cream base, with red and maroon patterns of directional lines and geometric shapes. We purchased this beauty from a Woman Corporative in Morocco and 100% of the funds were paid directly to the original owner of the rug.
Azilal rugs, as their name suggests, originate from the craggy and steep Azilal region, located in the remote and hard to reach High Atlas mountains in Morocco. Women from these tribes hand-weave these rugs from a background of undyed ivory wool and wool and cotton tainted with vegetable dye. The motifs and geometric designs woven into the rugs tell stories of rural life, motherhood and childbirth. Azilal carpets range in thickness and density - some are quite thick and warm like a Beni Ourain, while others are lighter in texture and feel.
